I grew up vegetarian, but eventually started eating meat. Now I’ve come to a point where I feel like I need to transition my eating habits (and my lifestyle) again. I’ve decided to become vegan.
Funny as it sounds it was a Facebook video that inspired me to make this important life change to being vegan. I found it on YouTube, as well. You can check out the video here. It is super inspiring, and covers not only the concept of eating animal products, but also the idea of compassion vs. society influence. It’s a short power point lecture, and I highly recommend watching it. Even if you don’t go vegan it will certainly change your way of thinking.
My reasoning for becoming vegan is simple – health, environment, and animals. After doing research I’ve decided that a vegan diet is the healthiest option for my body. It is also the healthiest option for the environment, as animal product industries are big polluters (along with many other awful things). Does an animal in pain, being tortured, or even killed make you want to cry? Yeah, me too. Nuff said.
Is Vegan Safe/Healthy?
A lot of people have concerns about whether or not being vegan is safe. It is! The big worries people tend to have are “where will I get my protein” and “what about calcium for strong bones”. These are non-concerns. Check out this article about the protein myth. They also have tons of other amazing articles. This one is about dairy products. Look through their site – they gave some amazing information. I already knew quite a bit before checking out their site, but I also learned a lot from reading these articles. Even if you don’t’ plan to go vegan, it’s good to stay informed about nutrition so you can find the best way to keep your family and yourself healthy. This website covers a wide range of topics, from protein to things like B12 vitamins, eggs, and essential fatty acids. I promise that if you do proper research on the topic that you’ll find all the confidence you need to either make the switch yourself, or support those who have.
There are probably hundreds (or even thousands) of resources out there with information, recipes, etc., but these are the ones I liked the most and found to be the most helpful.
21-Day Vegan Kickstart (From the same website as above, provides recipes and information for your first steps into veganhood.)
Vegucated (A documentary following three meat and cheese loving individuals who commit to eating a vegan diet for 6 weeks.)
I highly recommend all of these above resources. However, there are tons of others out there on the web if you’re looking for something different. Simply do a Google Search for vegan information and you’ll find a wide variety of resources to help you better understand or grow as a vegan.
My journey has just started, but I will keep you all posted with updates on my progress and yummy recipes I’m trying out. Check the Journey to Veganhood page for more information.
